A lot has happened since my last blog entry.

I was employed at this place called OLC Global for a few short weeks. It was a nightmare. It was in a former daycare building that looked like a castle. What I did there was call small businesses and try and sell them access to their Dunn & Bradstreet business credit report. I feel that it is a giant scam, and had zero heart in it and zero desire to take hard earned money from business who were already struggling to stay afloat. Besides not having any interest in the place, it was ran by a lot people who should not be in charge of anyone. The human resources department was actually fired while I was there, so it was a mess.

So I am happily employed now at a tractor dealership. I work in the parts department doing all sorts of things. This job is great because I each day is something different. I am thankful to have found this job. If you know me, you know that I know absolutely nothing about farming and farm equipment. So I am obviously learning a lot. My daily commute is 100% rural, and I love it. I drive around 18 miles outside of the city into the vast farmland that is Kansas.

Here is the entrance to someones field that I drive by every day. I thought the sign was funny.

Portrait Session Preview

Many of you know that when it comes to taking portraits I pretty much suck at it. It's not my thing, it is a weak area that I need to work on, so I am doing just that. Here is a few images from a portrait session I shot Saturday morning of my friends Doc and Stephanie. I went into this session shooting unnatural to me, but then I just started shooting what I was seeing. I hope they like them, I am pleased with the outcome.

In western Kansas there are a lot of old houses. This house is located in Rooks County. Back in its time this house would have been massive. I imagine that there are combines harvesting the wheat surrounding this house right now.

Can making my own camera lens respark my creativity?

I have had a creativity block for a long time. It didn't matter what I seemed to be doing, nothing was turning out like I hoped, and there was nothing I was hoping to turn out. This is not a new thing for me because this has happened from time to time throughout my life. However this one was longer than what I can remember. I would throw together random videos with random songs post them on youtube, shoot random photos of random things and post them on this blog and nothing would satisfy me. The fact that there is absolutely no traffic on this blog does not help things either. Even thought I would remind myself that this blog is for me and not you, it still bothers me.

So to get out of this funk I have been reading a lot of blogs and looking at things on the internet. One site I ran across was a do it yourself website dedicated to photographers creating things for their craft. The things on there are from basic fixes to complete construction of some complicated things. The one thing that caught my attention was the construction of a custom lens. I had two broken lenses laying around and started thinking I could build a lens from the camera mount plate on them. I also had two broken enlarger lenses for parts to add to the pile and options available to me. Constructing a lens is rather basic, but it can get as intense as you want it too at the same time. I like to keep things basic as I am not a scientist or an engineer.

While trying to figure out the design I was testing in video mode and hand holding things.

After coming up with a solid design held together by black photo tape I took a photograph of Super Mario. To shoot this photo I used direct sunlight outside on my patio. The Super Mario is about an inch tall and is on my key chain.

After deciding I was happy with the design, I then started the gluing and solidifying process. This took all of one evening.
The next day at work I shot a couple of test shots of flowers. The first shot is of a yellow carnation, and the second is of a some random purple flower off some plant in the studio greenhouse.

Finally if you are wondering what this contraption looks like I have included a photo for you. I am proud of how it looks, it looks pretty legit and honestly I kind of impressed myself here. Included in this photo are the two flowers pictured above.

Thank you to Travis and Lucein for sending me the 35mm film camera with broken lens about two years ago. That lens is the lens mount on this, so without it I do not know how this could have come together.

The bossman at work challenged everyone to create some personal, portfolio quality photographs to help boost creativity. The designers reached into a hat and pulled out names. I worked with designer, Jennifer Cameron on two projects. We had complete freedom to do anything and everything we wanted. So we had no limits except the limits of ourselves. Upon our first discussion we made it clear with each other, that we wanted to get out of the studio. We then tossed around ideas and came up with two stories we wanted to tell.

One of our ideas was to tell a story of how things come together at work, from the idea to the final product. Generally everything starts on paper and through a lot of hard work by carpenters, painters, designers, setup crews, and photographers the end result is a beautiful photograph of the clients merchandise. I see this as an analog to digital type of process. So to tell this we looked around the Triad and found the perfect place in Winston-Salem's arts district. The story goes like this, the idea to paint a giant mural on a wall starts as a drawing on paper, then gets painted on a wall and finally it is photographed. Here are two images from that session. The other idea we had was to utilize the full moon. All of you who follow this blog know that I love the challenge of shooting at night with long exposures so this was right up my alley. We wanted the image to be something that you would see or be involved in during the day time and not be able to tell that the light used to photograph was being reflected off of the moon (it is not a light source). We decided on a picnic setting. We set up the image on the night of March's full moon at around midnight. Design work by Jennifer Cameron. Photography by me.

A photo blog?

This blog has always been about photography and images that I have created. I have came to a stand still with creatively seeing and shooting things it seems like. Plus it's not like anyone reads this anyhow.
There is a lot that goes into my head when shooting a photograph. They say that an artists hardest critic is him/her self. I know this to be true. I have not had the desire for a long time to get out there and shoot for some reason. However as the season has changed to Spring, I have felt the desire to get out there and shoot more. This will all start for me next week when I take a little vacation.
My job has kept me rather busy. We are toying with new things and concepts that I have been involved with as well as my normal daily tasks. This is not overwhelming me by any means, it is simply making my brain work double duty, logically and creatively. I expect this to be a good year for these things and I hope too not be let down by them. Patients is not something I am good at. I always say that 'Patients are sick people in a hospital and this hospital does not have any more beds.' I am trying to learn how to improve on this, and I hope it pays off like my mom and dad always say it does. Time will tell I suppose.
I have been playing around with video shooting and production. I guess it is eating up more of my time than photography has been, and that might explain the photographic drought. Who knows. So if you care to watch, please check out the videos I have up on YouTube. There is nothing groundbreaking in there at all, just things that are random, silly, or interesting too me. I am not going to be winning an Academy Award anytime soon, that is for sure.

Objects are one thing I enjoy shooting. Objects stay where you put them and are patient with you when lighting them. People never stay where you put them, and get distracted easily. This is the reason why there are no images of people on my blog. One of my instructors told me that I needed to look at people the same way that I do objects and simply objectify people. I understood what he was saying, but I simply am not capable of doing that at this point.

So I present to you an object, a piece of driftwood. This is something I found in the prop room at work so it is not directly from a beach. I wish it were something that I found but I simply have no luck at finding things on the beach.

Tonight was a cloudy night blocking all possibilities to see the epic lunar eclipse. I was out in the cold hoping for a brief moment to take a few photographs. That never happened.
While waiting I became bored. Looking around me I snapped off five images of some of the things surrounded me.

This pine tree was suffocating the sky as it stood in my way.

This was taken with my dslr at a focal length of 70mm. The shutter speed was 25 seconds with an aperture rating at f/2.8 with an ISO of 400.

On the way home from Kansas I stopped in St Louis to show my friend Lauren the Arch. She was impressed and wanted to get out and shoot some photographs. Our first try at doing this did not work out as the Park Ranger told us we were not able to go on the grounds. I forgot to mention that it was 3:00 in the morning and about 15 degrees out. The Ranger was kind enough to tell us where we could go. So we drove down to Sullivan BLVD and walked around for a while.
Here is a candid shot of my friend Lauren working her magic.
Exposures were long and ISO was high.

I am going home to Kansas for Thanksgiving next week, and I cannot wait. I have been cleaning off some old hard drives and found an image that screams "Kansas" too me. This image is pretty old. It was shot with my first DSLR about four or five years ago probably with the kit lens. There is nothing fancy here, nothing of a creative masterpiece or anything close to the sort.

Wasp video

I was sitting at my desk today and this wasp fell from the ceiling. I trapped him with the nearest thing within my reach, a lupe. Somehow this inspired me to make a video about him.
The wasp was not harmed during the making of this video and was set free once the filming had completed. I released him back into the wild outside of the paint shop at Alderman.

This is the Saint Anthony Cemetery in Chase County, KS. This was taken in late May of this year on a drive through the blooming Flint Hills. The Flint hills are in my opinion one of the must see travel destinations of Kansas.

This summer I drove through southern Indiana. It was a nice drive with rolling hills and farms. I stopped at an abandoned farm. These bricks are the grain silo. The silo is pretty much the only thing left standing.
This was shot with 'Rosebud' on whatever black and white film was in there, probably tmax 100.

Sometimes I like looking straight down onto things. This probably started in my subconscious when I first saw the movie called Candyman. There are a lot of camera views looking directly down on a city in that movie and it caught my attention. It is a pretty common thing in movies now, but that is the first one that I can remember sticking out in my memory.
Anyhow back to the point... This is a plant in the Nevada desert.

Today several of my friends from college drove across my home state of Kansas on their journey back to North Carolina. They of course drove I-70 across the whole state. I have been speaking with one of them via text messages and they stopped in Victoria at the Cathedral of the Plains at my suggestion. I am not sure where else they stopped or if they even stopped anywhere else. I wish they could have stopped to visit my friend Renee in Concordia but it didn't work out.
Driving the interstate through Kansas doesn't allow you to see the good parts. I guess that is where the idea for this blog post comes from. I have been to a lot of the good places in Kansas and want to share them.
The following image was taken in Rooks County Kansas near Sugar Loaf mound, and about three miles from where my dad grew up. One of his friends lived on the homestead that this barn was apart of when they were younger.
I shot it with 'Rosebud', my Mamiya 645 Medium Format camera on Kodak chrome. Edited in post to add more feeling of desolation to the image.

Atmosphere Weather Testing

On my last full day in Las Vegas I was getting fuel in my car when I noticed one lonesome cloud in the north western sky. This cloud is not a normal cloud in respect to the natural atmosphere. I have no idea what is going on, and who is doing the testing (the government) but it was obvious to me. I then went on to wonder how many drunk people there were wondering around on the strip at that very moment without a clue something like this was going on.

Here is a 360 degree Panoramic taken from the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles, California. This was a nice hike up to the top of this hill. The original Bat Cave is down in the dark valley area on the right side of the image. The Hollywood sign is in on the left side of the image by the tower on top of the mountain (hill). We stopped off at the Rock-A-Hoola for a little urban exploring and photographing on the drive to LA. She took a few photos of me and I took a few of her.

Then once the classes started going and the assignments started to pick up we slacked off on shooting for ourselves. On my recent adventure in Greensboro I shot this apartment building. The original image was shot in colour and was converted to black and white. Colour elements can still be seen in some of the windows. I was trying to make a pattern with the coloured windows.

Joey gave us a safari day last Tuesday as an assignment. A lot of us took the bus to Greensboro. Once we arrived we enjoys a coffee at the Green Bean before walking around town. It was a little windy and cold but we all managed.

My dad has been rebuilding this car for a little over ten years now. It was in a pasture in north central Kansas for a few decades before he bought it to rebuild. Needless to say, it has been quite the project. Paint is being done now and this car sure is going to be pretty once it is finished. A lot of the body panels are off still so photographing the car is hard to do at this point simply because it is not a car, it is a lot of car parts...
So I found some of the cars sexy curves and wanted to show them to you. I hope you enjoy them.

Kansas Sunset

My brothers, Travis and Chris and I took a little road trip to 'the end of the road' of all places while I was home for Thanksgiving Break. We were there at sunset and I ran off into a wheat field to get some photos while they threw rocks into the river.
The end of the road is a real place. The road just stops at the river. If you did not know it was there you would take your car for a little swim.

I tried some light painting. I tried to keep it simple and organic looking. I don't know. Some old guy came up and started talking about how he tried to keep thing the old way by shooting double exposures on film instead of using photoshop. I thought to my self, 'if you only know half of the assignments I printed in the darkroom'. It was funny, he thought I was some digital kid who didn't know anything about traditional photography.

When I was in Pennsylvania last month I took a series of photos with my point and shoot so I could make a panoramic out of them. Here is that panoramic.

My mom and dad have been here all week visiting from Kansas. They are staying at some RV park on Lake Norman. My boss, Brian Gomsak, gave me an assignment to take their portraits while they are here. Needless to say with the tropical weather system that moved through here this week I was thinking I would have to shoot these indoors. However on my way to the shoot today the weather cleared out and made for some very nice light!
These were shot in the shade cast by their RV using my Alien Bee B800. Many of you know that shooting people is not my cup of tea and that I struggle with it. However today I have to say that everything fell into place. Of course I love the photos because they are of my parents, but I actually think they are good! Most of you also know that I am never satisfied with my own work, so this is a great accomplishment for me.
Mom and Dad were talking about the last time they had their photo taken and trying to figure out when it was. They decided it was one I took of them way back when I was in high school for their wedding anniversary. I remember shooting that in the basement of their house with my Canon AE1 and a regular lamp and aluminum foil as a reflector.

Anyhow, here they are. I hope you enjoy them. I like the Black and White one the best.

We were doing a little remodeling a while back and we never got around to finishing, watch your step!

Perhaps we should start a fire to warm up the place.

If I had known you were stopping by I would have cleaned up, sorry about the mess.

Here is where I have been sleeping.

Part of the remodel we were doing was the addition of a wing on the west end of the estate.

We never got around to putting the handrail back onto the stairs.

Please be extra careful as you go up the stairs!

As you might have guessed, the banister has been removed as well.

So please do not fall down, it is a long drop!

The lawn needs to be mowed as well. Watch your step out there on your way out!

I wanted to shoot this piece of pottery for my fourth promo. Pottery by its self looked kind of odd so I put some Sushi from the grocery on it. The image is not for the food, its for the pottery.

Rick Smith Assignment

Today Rick Smith visited us at school and gave us an assignment at 10:45 that was due at 3:00pm.
The challenge here was not the time but the specifics and lack thereof. We had to incorporate three elements, paper, glass, and metal and have an image that projects the strength, longevity, confidence, security of a company that is celebrating its 125th year of business. The image should be dynamic, memorable, thought provoking, original, and creative.
